Kites

Buying guide of a kite

Are you looking for a kite? Look in the Telstar Surf kite shop for the right advice. When buying a kite you have to take into account all kinds of different aspects, with which wind do you want to sail, what is your weight, how many kites do you want to buy, what size do you need, and so on! That's why you don't just buy a kite, there is quite a bit involved. Read below what you should pay attention to when purchasing a kite.

What size kite do I need?

Determining the right kite size depends on your own weight, the spot and the wind conditions with which you want to go on the water. The harder the wind blows, the smaller the kite. The same, of course, also applies to your weight. The heavier you are, the faster you will grab a large kite. The spot can also play a role in this. Inland, for example, the wind is less strong than at the sea, but you are again not bothered by waves and currents. All kinds of factors that need to be taken into account before buying a kite.

When you start with kite you will probably first look at one kite. If you buy one kite you want to be able to sail in most circumstances. You will do that between 14 and 21 knots. These conditions make it easy to start kitesurfing. The more stable and the more pressure in the kite, the easier it becomes. That is why you should choose a kite that covers the wind range in which you want to sail as much as possible. For most kiters this will be a kite between 10 and 12 square meters.

Below in the table is an average guideline with which wind force / knots you can sail with which kite size (the table is an indication, for specific advice please call Telstar Surf).

Types of kites

Every kite is different. From tube kites to mattress kites, there are many out on the market. The most commonly used kites are the kites that you can inflate, well known as the tube kites. The air that is pumped into the kite creates tension / pressure in the kite. As a result, the kite retains its shape in the air and on the water, and is therefore easy to fly and launch. The pressure also ensures that the kite molds to its shape. Every kite has a different purpose and has therefore a different shape.

To find a suitable kite, we have provided a clear explanation per category. Take your time reading the differences.

Freeride / beginner kites

The Freeride kites are everyone's friend. Freeride kites have always been popular because they are very versatile. This makes them suitable for kiters who have years of kite experience and for the beginner who still has to learn the sport.
The freeride kites are easy to relaunch, have a large wind range and are fun to ride. Besides that; they have the 'sheet and go' effect: after steering the kite, the kite automatically takes you to tow.
A freeride kite also has a wonderful 'sweet spot' that makes it easy to jump, do gymnastics and give you enough hange time to do old school tricks.

Well-known freeride kites are: North Reach - F-one Bandit - GA Spark - Naish Triad - Duotone Evo - Ozone Catalyst - Ozone Enduro

Performance Freeride kites

Big jumps and a lot of hang time. That's all what Performance freeride kites are about. The longer you stay in the air the better! The kites are extremely good at altitude and easy to use. Because of the huge sweet spot you will fly with ease and comfort through the air, you could almost call it floating!

Popular performance freeride kites are the Duotone Rebel - Cabrinha Switchblade - Ozone Edge - Core XR - North Orbit

Allround / Freestyle kites

Are you looking for a kite with which you can do everything? Nothing is too crazy, from jumping, kiteloops to unhooked tricks, then an all-round kite might be something for you! Have you reached the point where you like to jump, make front rolls, do a Raley unhooked or maybe even put down your first S-bend and practice with beautiful kite loops? Then these awesome all-round kites are for you! The kites can do it all but does not explicitly excel at anything. Perfect if you want to do anything and everything with your kite.

Thanks to the shape of the kite, the combination between a delta and C shape kite ensures an all-round kite for a responsive and fast steering behavior. By using a bridle, the kites are simpler than C kites and they are easy to depower. And, as the name suggests, you can do everything with it. Let's go!

Well-known all-round kites: Cabrinha FX - Go Pure - Naish Dash - Duotone Dice - Ozone Enduro - F-One Bandit

Wave kites

In the waves, kites need to have a few important properties, such as: fast restart, drift ability and low-end power. The quick start comes in handy when you're in the breaking waves. When a big boy arrives, you want to be able to get away asap.

The drift power is important when you catch up with your kite while riding the wave. When overtaking, your lines will droop, making your kite rudderless. A drifting kite flies backwards easily, keeping tension on the line. Your kite should also deliver power easily. This allows you to quickly switch to a smaller kite size. This is desirable on your wave surfboard because these kites can be steered much faster. Due to their properties, wave kites are also perfect to use for novice kiters. In addition to the aforementioned properties, the kites also have a good hang time, so you can actually go in all directions with them.

Typical wave kites are: Duotone Neo - Ozone Reo - North Carve

Wakestyle kites

Are you the one who wants to become world champion within the kitesurfing world and put down one handle pass after another? Then put on your boots and start wakestyling!
The Wakestyle kites are also called C-shape kites. There is a small group of kiters who qualify for these kites. The rider knows exactly what they want and how they want to land them tricks.

Wakestyle kites get their name from its shape (a "C" shape). The kite has no bridles and you attach the lines directly to the kite. Often the kites are sailed with 5 lines to ensure stability. The C-kites are suitable for megaloops and landing wakestyle tricks like Liam Whaley or Aaron Headlow do. They land many handle pass tricks with these kites because of the amount of slack they can create in the lines. As a result, the kite does not pull hard with an unhooked move, making it easier to lay down a handle pass.

Well-known C-shape kites: Naish Torch - Duotone Vegas - Ozone C4 - Cabrinha Chaos

Foil / Ligtwind kites

There are two types of kites available for foiling. Foil kites fly in very little wind, because they are lightweight. The kites have no leading edge (the tube at the front) and therefore a large aspect ratio. These kites require a slightly different technique with starting, landing and flying compared to normal tube kites. You can also use tube kites for foiling, but then it is wise to look for a lightweight kite that easily delivers power. In most cases these kites have one strut instead of 3 or 5. They fly in very light wind conditions, but are also faster overpowered.

Old aged kites

In addition to the latest models, part of the collection consists of older models. These products are specially purchased to be able to offer good material for every budget. Both individual kites and complete kite sets (set with kite, board, bar, leash and pump) are for sale at Telstar Surf at competitive prices.
