Buying a Windsurfing Boom

Are you looking for a windsurfing boom? Then you probably wonder what you have to pay attention to. When you want to buy a windsurfing boom for your windsurfing set there are several characteristics you can take into account, like: the material, the outline, the head piece, the diameter, the extension and the adjustable outhaul. To find out exactly what to look for when buying a windsurf boom, we will go into more detail below.

Material of a windsurfing boom

Windsurfing booms are roughly made of two materials. These are carbon and aluminum. Carbon windsurfing booms are stiffer than aluminum booms. When you want to go fast and are overpowered on your board, a carbon windsurfing boom is nice. This windsurfing boom makes sure that the sail stays aerodynamic. Besides that, carbon windsurfing booms are almost impossible to break. Aluminum windsurfing booms are mostly chosen because of the price. These windsurfing booms deliver great performances but can bend, warp and in some cases break during the years. Aluminum windsurfing booms are less stiff than carbon windsurfing booms, but more attractively priced and therefore ideal for beginners or those on a tighter budget. Finally, there are windsurfing booms with a combination of aluminum and carbon.

The extension of your windsurf boom

Nowadays you can adjust your windsurfing boom so you only need one windsurfing boom for several sails. This is of course a solution for many people, but be aware that the windsurfing boom becomes less stiff and strong when you extend it a lot. When the windsurfing boom loses its stiffness your sail will feel less stable.

Outline of a windsurfing boom

The outline of a windsurfing boom is adapted to the sail it is meant for. You have special windsurfing booms for wave surfing and for slalom surfing. A windsurfing boom for wave surfing is narrower and a race windsurfing boom is wider. When the racing boom would be narrow as well, the bulge in the sail would hit the windsurfing boom. So when you buy a windsurfing boom, take a good look at the discipline it is meant for.

Which diameter for a windsurfing boom?

Windsurfing booms come in different diameters. Most windsurfing booms have a diameter of 26 to 30 mm, the standard diameter is around 29 to 30 mm. Besides the standard diameters, windsurfing booms are also available in a RDG variant, this stands for Reduced Diameter Grip. This grip is even thinner than the 26 mm windsurfing boom and is ideal for people with smaller hands, like children and women. It also has the advantage that in cold weather you will experience less cramping in your hands.

The boom head

Windsurfing booms today are all equipped with a headpiece with a quick release buckle. The biggest difference between the different windsurfing boom heads is the way the boom head is attached to the boom tube. At cheaper models, the windsurfing boom head is often attached to the boom tube with allen screws. This allows you to easily disassemble the windsurfing boom, but it does provide less strength. On more expensive models, the tube of the boom runs through the boom head and the boom head can hinge. These cannot be taken apart but the construction is a lot stronger.

The adjustable outhaul on a windsurfing boom

When you are a real race fanatic, an adjustable outhaul can be the solution! With this you can adjust the outhaul tension to your liking while windsurfing. Some windsurfing booms can be standard equipped with such an adjustable outhaul. For other booms you can install a separate set yourself.
