windsurf masts

Are you looking for a new mast? But don't know which one yet? Masts from Unifiber are available in different sizes, carbon percentages, diameters and curves. Unifiber has the right mast for every windsurfer! Below we explain which mast is perfect for you.

Which mast is suitable for me?
There are several masts available with different bending curves. There are three different curves: Constant Curve, Constant FL Curve or Constant FH Curve. It is very important to look at this bending curve, the sails are specifically designed for the curve of a mast. Fortunately, most brands nowadays use a constant curve mast. But there are certainly exceptions. To know which curve you need, you can look at the second image above or check our https://www.telstarsurf.nl/surfshop/telstar-tips/masten-wetenschap/ masts page (note the year of construction of your sail). Look at the sail brand and check the curve!

Have you found the right curve for your brand? Then there is the possibility to choose the right carbon percentages. At Unifiber you can choose between three different carbon percentages: C50, C75 and C100. But when do you choose which mast?

  • C50: The Essentials C50 masts serve as an entry point to the Unifiber range of high-end masts and offer a good balance between value and quality. Highly recommended for recreational windsurfing, they are the first choice for beginner and hobby surfers. Note! The less percentage of carbon there is in a mast the less vulnerable it is, think crashes, dropping it on the ground or putting it on a pebble. But a mast with more carbon can handle more curve tension. (Think downhaul tension) So use these masts only for a Freeride-oriented sail and don't leave the sail rigged under tension for too long.
  • C75: The Unifiber HD C75 mast range offers an excellent mix of durability and responsiveness that is optimal for many surfers. With their impressive performance, these masts are a great match for waverriders, amateur racers and high-wind freeriders looking to take their windsurfing abilities to the next level. In short these masts are very all-round, they are strong and can retain a lot of curve allowing you to make the most of your sail.
  • C100: The Elite C100 masts are our most popular choice for high-end wave and racing sails. The lightning-fast flex of this mast ensures optimal response and power control for your sail. For dedicated and serious windsurfers, this is the best choice for low weight, high performance and a durable mast.

SDM or RDM
You probably hear the terms dropped here and there regarding the diameter of a windsurfing mast. There are 2 types of diameter masts available RDM and SDM.

  • SDM stands for Standard Diameter Mast. Logically, this is the mast with the thicker diameter. These masts are sailed in 80% of masts. These SDM masts are used by freeriders, freerace, slalom and racers. The ideal diameter is also indicated on your sail.
  • RDM stands for Reduced Diameter Mast, which means the diameter of the mast is smaller. The RDM mast has a thicker rigging thickness and is stronger. It is often used by wave and freestyle windsurfers. Want to know what thickness you need? Look on your sail or sail cover, which often indicates the optimum mast.
