Buy SUP leash

It can sometimes happen that you fall when you are paddling. In such cases, having a SUP leash will come in handy. The leash, also called cord, is connected to your body. This way your SUP board won't take off without you. Isn't that nice?

Compared to a surfboard, a SUP board is a lot heavier and bigger, which means there will be a lot more force on the leash during a flush. Therefore, while SUPing you need a leash of thicker poly-urethane to prevent breaking.

What to pay attention to when buying a SUP leash?

To make the right choice between many different SUP leashes, Telstar Surf would like to help you on your way. Read below what to look for when buying a SUP leash.

Length of a SUP leash

The length of a leash has a lot of influence on your session. A shorter leash will not cushion the force of your board as well in case of a fall. A long one on the other hand will make you swim a long way to get back to your board. So each has its advantages and disadvantages.

In general, we can say that the length of your SUP leash should be 'approximately' the length of your SUP board. This is however a rule of thumb, personal preferences may provide different sizes.

Coiled or uncoiled SUP leash?

We can distinguish between two different types of supboard leashes, namely coiled and uncoiled.

  • Coiled leash: a coiled leash, also called short leash, can be seen as a 'coiled' string. The biggest advantage of this is that a coiled leash will not drag through the water as much as an uncoiled leash. On the other hand, a coiled leash cannot dampen power as well as an uncoiled leash.
  • Uncoiled leash: an uncoiled leash, also called a long leash, has the biggest advantage of being able to dampen a lot of force. On the other hand, an uncoiled leash drags through the water faster and you can't pull your SUP board towards you as quickly.

In our opinion, neither SUP leash is right or wrong. It is important for you to determine what you like during your SUP session!

Where to attach a SUP Leash?

You're ready to hit the water, but where are you going to attach your SUP leash? There are different possibilities to attach your SUP leash, namely; around your knee or ankle. Most SUPers wear it around the ankle, even though it has some disadvantages. Especially at sea, it is wise to secure your leash around the knee. The force of a wave can be very strong and the SUP leash can come off your foot with a jolt. The leash just below the knee is then a particularly good alternative. Do you sail on inland water? Then the leash around your ankle won't hurt.

Now just which leg. A popular habit among wave surfers is attaching the leash to the back leg. This ensures that the leash will bother you the least while supboarding.
