What do you look for when buying a skateboard?
When you start skateboarding, all the information you receive can be overwhelming. Maybe you're asking yourself the question: which skateboard is suitable for me? Below we explain what you can look for. Think about the material the board is made of, the size of your skateboard, the different skateboard wheels and of course the looks you go for!
Most skateboards are made of maple wood. This material is suitable for skateboards because it is very strong yet flexible. This allows it to withstand the impact of your jumps and tricks. The strongest material that skateboards are made of is Canadian Maple.
There are different sizes of skateboards. You can assume that the larger your shoe size is, the wider the deck should be. If the deck is too narrow, the board will feel unstable and if the deck is too wide, maneuvering will be more difficult. In addition, it is recommended that you look at your own height, the longer the skater the longer the skateboard is a good rule of thumb. When you are just starting out, it is wise not to choose a board that is much longer than your own legs. Below we give example sizes that may be appropriate:
Skateboard deck width
Shoe size: 40 = Skateboard deck width 8.0"
Shoe size: 44 = Skateboard deck width 8.25"
Shoe size: 46 = Skateboard deck width 8.5"
Skateboard deck length
Person lenght: 160 cm = Skateboard deck length 31.5 - 31.875"
Length person: 170 cm = Skateboard deck length 31.75" - 32.00"
Person lenght: 180 cm = Skateboard deck length 31.875" - 32.25"
Skateboard wheels come in different sizes. The bigger the wheels the better your board will feel during tricks and on ramps. Is your intention to skate mostly on the street? Then go for smaller wheels. These will bring you closer to the ground and the board will feel more stable.
