Buying a Kitesurf Trapeze

Are you looking to buy a kite trapeze? We offer a wide selection of kite trapezes from top brands like Mystic, ION, Duotone, Prolimit, Brunotti, and more. A kitesurf trapeze differs from a windsurf trapeze by the addition of a hook and an attachment point for the safety leash. Many windsurf trapezes don't have this option. To help you choose the right kite harness, we explain the differences between certain kitesurf trapezes below.

Kite hip harness

The first step is to determine whether you want a hip or seat trapeze. Nowadays, 90% of kitesurfers choose a kitesurf waist trapeze. This type of kite harness wraps around your waist and supports your hips. The advantage of a hip trapeze is that it provides good support and a lot of freedom of movement. The hook on a kite trapeze sits higher than on a seat trapeze. The biggest downside of a kite hip trapeze is that it can sometimes ride up. This is especially common for beginner kitesurfers who tend to fly the kite higher above them.

Each hip trapeze provides support in different areas. Since every body is different, what feels comfortable for one person may not be the same for someone else. That’s why there are also women’s trapezes on the market. These have a slightly different fit compared to men’s harnesses. Many kitesurf lessons are given with a seat harness for this reason.

Stiffness of the trapeze

Generally, there are two types of hip trapezes: softshell and hardshell. Hardshell trapezes provide maximum back support and fit securely around your waist. This stiffness is especially appreciated by kitesurfers who perform spectacular tricks and want to jump high. A softshell harness is often more affordable but still provides excellent comfort. Thanks to their flexible shape, they conform perfectly to your body. There are also trapezes that are a mix of both in terms of stiffness. It's important to always test or feel which harness suits you best.

Kite seat harness

A kitesurf seat harness is worn lower than a hip trapeze and is put on like a pair of pants. As the name suggests, the force is distributed across the hips instead of directly on the back. This type of harness is easily recognized by the straps that run under the legs. Although these straps slightly limit movement, they help keep the trapeze in place. Additionally, you are pulled more from below the water, which many beginners find more comfortable. A seat trapeze is a good choice for kitesurfers with back pain or anyone who finds it annoying when a hip trapeze rides up while surfing.

Important Considerations When Buying a Kite Harness

Comfort is the most important factor when choosing the right kite harness. Curious about our 5 tips for selecting the right kite trapeze? Check out our video!

It is essential to hang properly in the harness, just like you would when kiting, and pay attention to any pressure points. If you already feel pressure points, they will only get worse while kitesurfing. Make sure the pressure from the harness is evenly distributed across your body and that your back is well supported. This will help you kite for longer and more comfortably. Also, keep the following points in mind:

  • Does the kite harness provide proper support?
  • Are there no pressure points?
  • Does the kite harness have soft neoprene edges for extra comfort? Higher-end trapezes often come with this feature.
  • Does the harness stay in place without riding up? A wider bar pad helps with this.
  • Is it easy to put on the kite trapeze?
  • Does the trapeze have a good knife pocket? This is a sharp knife to cut your kite lines in an emergency, if needed.

A kitesurf trapeze is an essential part of your kitesurfing gear. While the price of the kite harness plays a role, don’t let this be your main consideration. If the trapeze doesn’t fit well, it can be very uncomfortable while kitesurfing. If you plan to use a harness for wave kitesurfing, consider checking out our other spreader bars.
