Windsurf sails

Buy windsurf sail

A windsurf sail consists of sails and monofilm. These two materials are glued and sewn together. The wave and freestyle sails often have a kevlar connection construction because these sails have to endure more. X-Ply is also used, this material ensures that the windsurf sail gets extra strength. To support the surf sail, battens are added across the width of the sail. Larger windsurf sails therefore need more battens than the smaller sails. In addition to supporting the windsurf sail, battens also provide stability while windsurfing.

To choose the right windsurf sail, you have to pay attention to a number of factors, which we explain below.

Body weight

Your body weight plays a major role in choosing the right windsurf sail. If you are heavy you need a bigger sail than someone who is light. This does not mean that you should have a large sail at wind force 10 or a small sail when there is no wind.

Experience

As an experienced windsurfer you can use a different sail than a novice windsurfer. Each discipline has its own beginners and advanced windsurf sails that have a certain construction that makes them adapted to the user level.

Discipline

The discipline you sail has the most influence on the choice of a windsurf sail. Wave and freestyle sails are a lot smaller and have a stronger construction than the slalom and racing sails. Every discipline and every brand has its unique characteristics, resulting in an enormous choice. We will explain more about the choice of sail for the discipline you sail.

Weather

In strong winds it is not recommended to sail with a large sail or with light winds a small sail. A large sail catches more wind than a smaller sail because it has a larger sail area. If you use a large sail in strong winds, controlling your windsurf sail sometimes becomes impossible. To prevent this, it is useful to take a smaller sail in strong winds and a larger sail in light winds so that you have the right balance between the wind that enters your sail and control.

Types of windsurfing sails

There are many options when it comes to windsurfing sailing. This is largely due to the many types of windsurf sails out there. We explain more about the choice of sail per discipline below.

Complete rigs

The complete windsurf rigs are not specifically aimed at a discipline and are mainly intended for novice or re-entry windsurfers. These sail sets are complete with sail, mast, boom and pull-up cord, so you don't have to put together your windsurf sail yourself. These sets are available in all kinds of different sizes and types, so there is a choice for everyone!

Wave sails

The wave windsurf sails are specially aimed at windsurfers who sail on the sea and offshore. The wave windsurfing is very playful and varied because every wave is different. These windsurf sails are made extra sturdy because waves crash into your sail and you make hard hits on the water. Without that extra reinforcement, there is a chance that your sail will immediately break when windsurfing at sea.

Freestyle sails

The freestyle windsurf sails are made for freestyle windsurfers. If you are someone who likes to make tricks and does not give up easily, then freestyle windsurfing is for you! These freestyle windsurf sails are extra reinforced because a lot of hard blows are made with the sail on the water to be able to make the perfect tricks.

Freeride sails

Freeride windsurfing is the most well-known form of windsurfing because it is very common. These windsurf sails are specially made for the windsurfers who want to pop back and forth over the water for fun. These freeride sails can also be used for the windsurfers who have just started windsurfing but know that they will make rapid progress.

Freerace sails

Freerace sailing is for windsurfers who want to blast over the water but find comfort a very important factor when looking for a windsurf sail. The freerace sails ensure that you get into plane quickly and jibes become more fun. The freerace windsurf sails also have a lot of stability. This is because there are often more than 5 battens in the sail that create stability. The most famous sizes of the freerace sails are the 7.2 and 7.7 m2. These sails can be used in many circumstances due to their large wind range.

Slalom sails

Slalom windsurfing is an extreme form of competitive windsurfing. It's all about who crosses the finish line first after completing a certain course. This can lead to exciting neck and neck competitions where the adrenaline rushes to your ears! The slalom sails plan extremely quickly so that you can make a good start. The slalom windsurf sails are also easy to control, so that you can focus on reaching the finish line at high speeds. These sails are very popular among the PWA windsurfers who are fighting for the world title in fierce conditions!

Foil sails

Foil windsurf sails are optimized sails for foil windsurfing. The foil windsurf sails are made of light materials so that you are easily lifted out of the water. The foil sails often have many slats in the sail that provide enormous stability during foiling. Foiling is a hype because with little wind you can hit the water with a small sail and compact board so that you can almost always be on the water.

Kids sails

Kids windsurf sails are made for children who want to get out on the water from an early age. In the past, the windsurf sails were heavy and difficult to get out of the water. Nowadays that is no longer the case due to the use of a lot of monofilm and little dust in the children's windsurf sails. The children's sails are considerably smaller in order to get a good grasp of the principles of windsurfing. Often there are no or a maximum of 2 battens in the windsurf sail. This is because the sails are very stable and sturdy on their own, so they need little or no support from the battens. The children's sails are available from 1.0 m2 to 4.0 m2. This ensures that there is a wide choice for every child in sizes, colors and brands.
