BUYING A MEN'S WETSUIT

Are you looking for a men's wetsuit? Then check out all our men's wetsuits above. You can find surf suits for every season and for every type of watersports athlete. It doesn't matter if you are a kitesurfer, windsurfer, wave surfer or a wakeboarder!

WHAT IS A MEN'S WETSUIT FOR?

You can purchase a wetsuit for two reasons. The first reason may be that you are looking for a men's wetsuit for the cold winter days. Your body can quickly become hypothermic due to the cold water and wind. It is therefore very important to purchase a good surfing suit.

All surfing suits have neoprene material. This is very flexible, so you will experience a lot of freedom of movement. In addition, it absorbs little water. The thin layer of water that does penetrate, warms itself by your own body heat.
The second reason why some people buy a wetsuit is to protect your body from the sun's bright rays. With a shorty or an overknee surf suit, your upper body is well protected from the sun.

TYPES OF MEN'S WETSUITS

There are so many types of men's wetsuits nowadays that we can imagine you might have lost track. Therefore we have listed all types of wetsuits for you below:

  • Semidry wetsuit: These men's surfing suits are by far the most commonly worn and are available for summer and winter temperatures. You will get wet in this type of wetsuit, but that thin layer of water will eventually warm up due to your own body temperature.
  • Streamer wetsuit: Within the semidry surf suits, the streamers generally feature the thickest neoprene. These surfing suits are therefore particularly suitable for the cold winter days in the months around winter. The seams are then also glued or taped, which prevents water from penetrating.
  • Full wetsuit: You can probably guess it, but these type of surf suits completely cover your body. These wetsuits do have a thinner layer of neoprene, which makes them less warm compared to the streamers. Fullsuits are mainly suitable for average temperatures, often already a bit more towards the summer months.
  • Overknee wetsuit: With this type of men's surfing suit, your entire body is covered, only three-quarters of your legs are exposed. The advantage of an overknee men's wetsuit is that these wetsuits are more comfortable to wear with kite- or wakeboard boots, because they don't extend to the ankle. These men's wetsuits are also mainly used in moderate temperatures.
  • Shorty: With a shorty, your arms and legs are not covered by a wetsuit. This makes these surf suits perfect for on the nice summer days!
  • Drysuit: You really only need to purchase a drysuit if you're going to hit the water in the most extreme weather conditions, when a wetsuit is too cold. A drysuit surfing suit is tight around your body, so no water will enter the suit. You can even wear normal clothes underneath.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A MEN'S WETSUIT?

When buying a men's wetsuit it is important to take into account a number of factors. Below we have worked out all the factors for you.

THICKNESS

When determining the right surf suit, the rule of thumb is: the thicker the neoprene, the warmer the wetsuit. There is a downside to very thick neoprene though, as it comes at the expense of comfort and freedom of movement.

Men's surf suits are available in thicknesses from 1 to 6mm. Usually all surf suits come with two different thicknesses. For example, a 4/3mm men's wetsuit has 4mm neoprene on the back and chest and 3mm neoprene on the arms and legs. The advantage of this is that you will experience a lot of freedom of movement at the arms/legs and it gives you extra warmth at your core.

Temperature: Thickness wetsuit:
Tropical (<22℃) 2/1, 2/2
Warm (<18℃) 3/2
Mild (>14℃) 4/3, 5/3
Cold (>8℃) 5/4, 5/3
Icy cold (<2℃) 6/4, 5/4

FRONTZIP, BACKZIP OR ZIPLESS

Our men's surf suits are available with a frontzip, backzip or zipless. With a backzip, the zipper is located vertically on the back and with a frontzip the zipper is located horizontally on the chest. The advantage of a frontzip zip, is that less water will run into the surf suit and you will experience more freedom of movement. For these two reasons, many kite- and wave-surfers choose to wear a frontzip men's wetsuit. The only drawback to this is that these surfing suits are a little less easy to put on. Backzip wetsuits, on the other hand, are easy to put on, but a little more water enters the surf suit and you will experience a little less freedom of movement.

In addition to performing a frontzip and backzip, some wetsuits also feature no zipper. This has its advantages and disadvantages. A disadvantage may be that a zipless surfing suit is a bit harder to put on, but the advantage is that you will experience more freedom of movement.

TYPES OF NEOPRENE

Within the wetsuits category, there are two types of neoprene: single-lined and double-lined neoprene. Double-lined wetsuits contain fabric on the inside as well as the outside. A single-lined wetsuit has only fabric on the inside and the outside has "bare" neoprene. The advantage of this is that the structure is dense, so you won't be bothered by cold winds. Compared to double-lined neoprene, these types of surfing suits are warmer. There is also a disadvantage to single-lined men's wetsuits, namely the high vulnerability.

SIZE AND FIT

When buying a wetsuit it is very important to look at the size and fit. This is because it is very important to choose the right size. But what is the right size? The right size is when the surf suit fits well, so that not too much water can get in. Comfort is also an important aspect to take into account when trying on a men's wetsuit.
